Role and Responsibilities Members of the editorial collective will: - Guide the direction and promotion of the book series.
- Conduct or oversee the solicitation, submission, refereeing, and acceptance of manuscripts.
- Communicate with authors and guide manuscripts toward publication, including gathering endorsements and helping finalize manuscripts for copyediting and typesetting.
- Oversee the publication of one book per year (at most two, one per seasonal catalogue).
Eligibility - As the role provides only an honorarium per edited title, candidates holding secure teaching or research positions may be prioritized.
- Applicants must encourage the submission of high-quality anthropological monographs and contribute to maintaining and developing HAU Books’ distinctive features.
- Editors located outside traditional academic centers are especially welcome. Proficiency in English is required.
Commitment to Sustainability and Open Access HAU Books is uniquely positioned as an Open Access publisher in anthropology. Its mission ensures that anthropological research and ethnographic findings can be freely shared and made accessible. HAU Books has pioneered sustainable Open Access publishing, supported by institutional funding and library pledges through Knowledge Unlatched, with which we can support the publication of a certain number of books. Libraries can pledge support until mid-December 2024. For works not funded by Knowledge Unlatched, additional Open Access funding or grants may be sought. Authors are responsible for securing translation funding, with administrative support available from HAU. Support and Term - The editorial collective will be supported by a Managing Editor and the Director, who handle relations with the University of Chicago Press and Knowledge Unlatched.
- Membership in the editorial collective is for a four-year term, beginning as soon as applicants are ready in 2025. A transition phase will allow for onboarding and learning the workflow.
Application Process Please submit a letter of application and a CV. Joint applications from two candidates are also welcome. In your letter, briefly indicate: - Your editorial experience (e.g., authored monographs, edited collections, special issues).
- Your vision for HAU Books.
- Your availability for this intensive but rewarding work.
Applications or inquiries should be sent to the HAU Books Editorial Search Committee at board@hausociety.org with the subject line "HAU Books Call for Editors". Applications are encouraged by January 30, 2025, but positions will remain open until filled. |
